Notes From Pastor Jody

Friday Greetings…

My note this week is coming to you from the Windy City. That’s right, I find myself in Chicago today. I received an invitation to return to my alma mater, Judson University, as the chapel speaker for Founders Day. It is an honor I gladly accepted. For one thing, it is great to have the opportunity to visit with many people that I haven’t seen for a long time. And perhaps even more importantly, I am able to spend some precious time with my parents who live in Columbus, Ohio. My oldest son and I flew into Columbus so that they could join us for the trip over to Chicago. We’re having a wonderful time, and are so very thankful for this time to connect.

The big announcement this Friday is our annual Harvest Party coming up next Friday, October 31st. This has to be one of our most effective outreach ministry events of the entire year. We open our gym up at 5:30pm, and basically throw a huge kids party for a couple of hours. The event is an excellent alternative to trick-or-treating out in the cold. The kids (and even a few parents) don various fun costumes. Our theme this year is “King of the Jungle,” although the theme doesn’t need to dictate what costume you wear. There are carnival games going on all around. There’s a great place for some pictures to be taken. Snacks are served. And of course, there is lots and lots of candy for the kids to take home…which is where you come in! Please bring bags of candy by the church office anytime between now and next Friday. We need all the help we can get here. I can assure you…your donations will definitely be put to good use. I haven’t heard a firm count through the years (I’m not sure it’s even possible to take one), but my sense is that we will have more than 500 people take advantage of this wonderful event. For many families, this is their first experience with our church. So get the word out. Invite a family that you know. Donate some candy. Come and be a volunteer. On an evening where darkness gets way too much publicity…come and be a part of an event where God uses it all for His glory.

On a completely separate topic, I know that some of you had some struggles with our sound system last Sunday. It was just way too loud. What most of you didn’t realize was that our sound team had spent the entire weekend installing a brand new sound board and monitoring system. It was not a typical Sunday. Pastor Scott is certainly aware of the issues, and asked that he have the opportunity to apologize to you personally. Here’s Pastor Scott…

A number of you approached me this past Sunday to let me know the music was too loud. What I appreciated was the spirit in which you addressed the issue. Thank you for letting me know. To be honest, it sounds completely different to me on the platform and I could not tell it was loud. While I am committed to worship that is celebratory and enthusiastic, I never want the volume to distract others from worshiping our Lord and Savior. If you were distracted in your worship by the volume level, I truly am sorry. Worship Ministries is committed to getting this right. What I ask for in return is your continued patience and dialogue as we work to upgrade and improve our audio and visual systems. Thank you.

-Pastor Scott

The exciting news is that we had 839 in worship and kids programs this past Sunday. We’re definitely growing, and I’m deeply grateful for that. A Sunday doesn’t go by that we don’t have first time visitors among us. I’m also glad to say that over the past couple of Sundays, we have had more than $7,000 given to the Great Commission Fund. Thank you so very much for your faithful and sacrificial giving so that Alliance missionaries can shine the light of the Gospel into places you and I have never even heard of…many of them risking their very lives to do so.

I sure hope you’re keeping up with your daily Scripture reading. If you’ve fallen behind…then jump back in today! Our reading today is Luke chapters 19-21. We’re reading about Zacchaeus who gave back the wealth that he had greedily stolen…and a poor widow who, out of her poverty, gave two small copper coins.

God Bless…
